Dr. Robert Cerfolio first joined the NYU Langone's Perlmutter Cancer Center back in 2017. He had spent over 20 years working at the University of Alabama Hospital. During his time in Birmingham, Alabama, Dr. Cerfolio carved out a reputation for being one of the most prolific and innovative surgeons in the entire United States.

Dr. Robert Cerfolio earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester. He completed his general surgery residency and his thoracic surgery fellowship at Mayo School of Medicine in Rochester. He currently practices as a thoracic surgeon at New York University Langone Hospital. He is specialized in treating asbestos-related diseases, including lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Dr. Robert Cerfolio’s expertise in robotic surgery, a less invasive surgical technique that creates smaller incisions, enables him to provide his patients with shorter recovery times. He also developed what has become known as the four-arm robotic approach to treat small cell and non-small cell lung cancers. Dr. Cerfolio uses this expertise in minimally invasive robotic thoracic surgery to provide the best care possible to his patients with lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other asbestos-related diseases.
