Education and Expertise
Dr. Joel Baumgartner earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Colorado and his surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Dr. Baumgartner currently practices at the University of California San Diego Health, Jacobs Medical Center. The center is known for being the biggest hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) center on the West Coast. One of Dr. Baumgartner’s special areas of interest is treating peritoneal mesothelioma with HIPEC.
Dr. Joel Baumgartner does not believe all the questions regarding HIPEC have been answered, but he does believe that enough evidence exists to show that it can significantly extend survival.
HIPEC
Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy is preceded by cytoreductive surgery to remove all visible tumors from the abdominal lining. HIPEC then bathes the abdominal organs in chemotherapy, killing any residual microscopic tumors. Dr. Baumgartner does not believe all the questions regarding HIPEC have been answered, but he does believe that enough evidence exists to show that it can significantly extend survival.
As an experienced surgical oncologist delivering HIPEC at one of the highest-volume HIPEC centers in the world, Dr. Baumgartner is well-positioned to provide the best care to his patients with peritoneal mesothelioma.
