Cancer Clinical Trials
Dr. Jonathan Dowell plays an active role in conducting clinical trials studying cancers of unknown primary sites. He’s done trials for patients with lung, head, and neck malignancies.
In two of his studies, Dr. Dowell analyzed the different aspects of treatment, and he went beyond looking at the physical results of the treatment. He looked at the behavior of his patients and the people employed in the medical field. Dr. Dowell, along with Shane Greene and Sachin Shah, published an evaluation where they looked at 423 patients of chemotherapy who had follow-up care. What the study suggested was how extensive effort was needed for thorough outpatient care. It recognized a need for having the right prescription adjustments and adequate pain management.
Dr. Jonathan Dowell has remained active in clinical research because he believes research will continue to lead the way to better cancer treatments.
Trends in Clinical Trials
Dr. Dowell and his team of researchers looked at consent trends for patients with cancer enrolled in clinical trials. He presented the results at the 2010 annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology. What they learned was how a patient’s consent to participate in these research studies was influenced by whether or not the patient had participated in clinical trials in the past.
Dr. Jonathan Dowell is particularly interested in manipulating telomerase activity in an effort to prevent tumor growth. He remains active in clinical research because he believes research will continue to lead the way to better cancer treatments.
