Hyperthemic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for the Treatment of Mesothelioma

Dr. Dessureault performs regional treatment of advanced abdominal malignancies, such as when malignant peritoneal mesothelioma spreads beyond the peritoneal lining of the abdominal cavity. Unlike systemic chemotherapy, hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) targets tumors directly, which helps to make it more effective and have less side effects. It is paired with cytoreduction, surgical removal of all visible tumors within the abdominal cavity. Then, HIPEC is delivered, bathing the abdominal cavity in chemotherapy for about 90 minutes to help kill any residual cancer cells.
