Standing at the forefront of cancer care, the the New York University Cancer Institute has crafted an renown image around its integrative research and treatment-based approach to cancer care.

This approach draws directly from the NYU Cancer Institute’s labs and provides patients with access to brand new treatments. The NYU Langone Medical Center is host to the Cancer Institute, and is considered one of the country’s best institutions for research, clinical care, and education. The Medical Center contains four entire hospitals, as well as six clinical facilities and two medical schools throughout New York City. The institute’s mission statement is as follows:

Patients at the NYU Cancer Center hail from all over the world to receive the best care possible. The institute also offers counseling and guidance for all strains of cancer, including malignant mesothelioma, the aggressive, asbestos-related cancer of the lungs.

Mesothelioma at Langone

Joining the staff of the New York University Langone Medical Center in 2015, Dr. Dan Sterman is the current director of the Multidisciplinary Pulmonary Oncology Program. Before his time at Langone, Dr. Stermas was on staff at the University of Pennsylvania Abramson Cancer Center.

Dr. Harvey Pass, revered thoracic surgeon, is also on staff at the NYU Cancer Institute. Dr. Pass is very well respected in the field of cancer research, pioneering various treatment approaches to address pleural mesothelioma. He is regarded as a world class physician and his presence simply cannot be replicated. Dr. Pass’ reputation precedes him in the cancer world, and his name is one known by mesothelioma experts everywhere.

Leading the discovery of the protein product of an unknown gene that is now commonly used for early detection of mesothelioma, Dr. Pass has revolutionized the field.

An Effective Approach

The NYU Cancer Center is currently part of a an effort to understand various strains of cancer at their most basic, molecular lever, in order to minimize risk and facilitate diagnosis. Such information would also be a great asset in developing novel cancer treatments.

Langone contains a couple special programs regarding melanoma, lung cancer, molecularly-targeted therapy, cancer signaling pathways, and general health disparities. The NYU Cancer Center is now a part of the Worldwide Innovative NEtworking Consortium in personalized cancer care; ensure that the institution will facilitate passing on this knowledge to the international cancer treatment community.

Important on the Global Stage

Designated by the NCI (National Cancer Institute), the Langone Center is among an elite class of treatment facilities who set the state for scientific advancements in cancer care. Langone and the other NCI designated institutes are leaders in the fight against cancer, revolutionizing therapy methods, early detection, and overall cancer prevention.

 

As a sub-institution within the Langone Medical Center, the NYU Cancer Institute has the option of engaging with patients suffering from ailments other than cancer. For example, heart disease can be seen as a related condition.

A Home for Cancer Care

One of the six clinical facilities, The NYU Clinical Cancer Center, is the home base for all cancer patients. This facility galvanized a wide range of cancer specialists in an eighty-five thousand square foot facility that spans thirteen stories. It is home to dedicated screening and diagnostic facilities, clinical care divisions, radiation therapy facilities, treatment facilities, women’s cancer programs, and genetic counseling, among other services.

The Radiation Treatment Center at NYU Langone provides patients with convenient access to chemotherapy and radiation therapies, eliminating the hassle that typically comes with traveling to treatment facilities. The Langone Cancer Center is the only center designated by the National Cancer Institute in New York City that provides radiation therapy in its own outpatient facility.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials are absolutely imperative to the research endeavors of the NYU Langone Center, providing patients with an integrative approach to care. Access to clinical trials provides the patient with forward-thinking approaches to high-quality care. Many trials aim to test the efficacy and safety of novel treatments, new approaches to care, and new parings of drugs. Patients that participate in such trials are given access to novel treatment techniques that have not yet been approved as safe for the general public; these patients are heroes, in that they help develop the newest treatments for future generations.

Other treatment techniques are reserved for testing new diagnostic approaches and/or prevention techniques. Many of these trials even explore palliative care or genetic issues.
