Dr. Bartlett’s Achievements

Dr. David Bartlett practices as a surgical oncologist and serves as Chair at the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) Cancer Institute. He is credited with pioneering hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, also known as hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC) for the treatment of abdominal malignancies such as malignant peritoneal mesothelioma.

Unlike systemic chemotherapy, HIPEC targets tumors directly, which helps to make it more effective and have less side effects. It is paired with cytoreduction, surgical removal of all visible tumors within the abdominal cavity. Then, HIPEC is delivered, bathing the abdominal cavity in chemotherapy for about 90 minutes to help kill any residual cancer cells.
